I retired after 25 years in combat arms and I never heard anything like stated in post #2 and #3, ever. I say again, ever. I went through OSUT in 86 and nobody ever said anything like this nor throughout the rest of my time. If your instructors really said shoot to wound, then they were completely incompetent and derelict in their duty. Sounds like hooey.

This! But then I friggin got assigned to Ft. McClellan afterwards!Hey, I’m just saying what I was told in basic. I wasn’t about to argue with them. I just wanted to graduate and get out of there.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they had trained shoot to sound at some point. Just listen to Jack Carr, Andy Stumpf, or any number of other SOF guys who were in prior to 9/11; they often talk about how different the pre- and post-9/11 military are just because wartime experience teaches you a lot of lessons that you can’t learn any other way.
