It allows the barrel to cool faster that's the main reason its done. Also a fluted barrel is stiffer than a regular barrel of the same weight.
OK, I have to ask a dumb question. How does removing metal, (fluting) from a barrel make it stiffer?
Removing metal from a barrel does not make it stonger but a 1" diameter barrel fluted to weigh as much as a 3/4" diameter barrel is stronger than a non-fluted 3/4" barrel and weighs the same.
I use refrigerated coolant when I flute a barrel - 28 degrees. This keeps both the barrel and cutter from heating up and does in fact reduce stress from the machining process. I don't know of anyone else that does this....
