7.62X39 AR gets my vote.
I have 3 and yes they run perfectly with steel case ammo, CPD mags, redX extended firing pin and usually with H2 buffers. Use either standarg trigger groups or use trigger groups that DO NOT USE REDUCED POWER SPRINGS.
My AR’s in 7.62x39 are Twice as accurate as any AK I’ve had with same magnified optics.l and just as reliable. 2 have over 2k rounds through them and 1 approaching 1k.
I’ve owned 14 AK’s(MAK90 x5, Maadi x2, WASR’s x2, “G”, Hungarian AMD, and a few others).
These are just my experiences and my opinions.

I have an unmodified Saiga with about 20 rounds down the tube I would trade for a couple of CC guns. 380, 38, 9mm just nothing to small like a TCP. I also have mags and ammo I would add for good pistols.

I've got an SKS-M and its my favorite thing that shoots 7.62x39. This is the factory variant that takes AK-Mags. The only trick to it though is it only likes chinnese AK mags (spineless) and those are pretty pricey these day.

Won’t lie I REALLY like my ruger American ranch in 7.62x39, threaded for my can, put a 1.75x5x Burris on it, takes mini 30 mag I prefer the 10 rounders.
