Hi all, Appleseed is returning to Excalibur Sporting Goods in Afton, OK on June 25-26. Come enjoy the Appleseed experience on this great range and be a part of the rebirth of our country's Rifleman heritage. Appleseed is a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching rifle marksmanship and Revolutionary War history. This is a two-day marksmanship clinic that focuses on rifle fundamentals from field positions, and is designed to teach all of the skills necessary for a shooter to be able to hit a 20" wide target out to 500 yards -- the "Rifleman's Quarter Mile" that Riflemen have traditionally been able to control with a rack-grade rifle, iron sights, and standard ball ammunition.

Everyone from experts to beginners will get a lot of out of the Appleseed experience. Experts will receive a great refresher in the fundamentals, and will benefit from the coaching of fellow expert Riflemen, which will help "keep the edge sharp" and will keep bad habits from creeping into their fundamentals. Novice shooters will learn proper fundamentals in a safe environment, supervised by experienced instructors, and will get a solid foundation on which to build their skills. Shooters who have been shooting for a long time but who have never had any systematic instruction, or have never been taught precision shooting from field positions, will benefit greatly. Everyone will benefit from learning about their history and heritage, as we teach the amazing true story of the beginning of American independence as you have never heard it before.

And don't leave the spouse and kids at home, either... Appleseed is great for the whole family. In fact, there is no better place for the kids to learn proper rifle marksmanship in a safe, supervised environment and hear history that is not taught in schools, or for the gun-shy spouse to come out and learn how to shoot... and have FUN doing it!

Whatever your reasons for possessing a rifle, you will benefit from being able to hit smaller and more distant targets from field positions. This class will make you a better hunter, competitive shooter, or defender of life and liberty.

You can expect to learn:
-- The difference between a Rifleman and a rifle owner
-- Safety
-- The sling as a marksmanship aid
-- Rock-solid field positions (standing, kneeling, seated, and prone)
-- The Six Steps to Firing the Shot
-- The Natural Point of Aim technique (NPOA)
-- Sighting in using the Inches, Minutes, Clicks (IMC) technique
-- Battle Sight Zero (BSZ)
-- Compensating for wind and bullet drop
-- What happened on April 18-19, 1775 and its importance
And a lot more.

The main type of target used for the event is the 25m Army Qualification Test from the 1950s/60s (the era of the M1 and M-14). Since the event is shot at 25m, any rifle will work -- center fire or rimfire. If you have both a center fire and a .22 and can't afford to shoot your center fire for the whole event, bring both! Use the .22 to save on money and to practice the fundamentals, and then bring out your center fire later in the event to apply the fundamentals to it. Though Appleseed encourages everyone to learn to be proficient with iron sights, any type of optics are welcome at this event. Appleseed is a "run what you brung" event -- bring any safely functioning rifle, and we will teach you how to be a better marksman with it. If you do not have a rifle, or do not have enough rifles for your whole group, a limited number of .22 LR "Liberty Training Rifles" are available. If you want to be sure to have one reserved for you, PM, e-mail, or call me.

The AQT course of fire is very fast-paced in parts, and is designed for a rifle that can be reloaded quickly -- therefore rifles with detachable magazines and/or ones capable of reloading with clips will be the best suited. A mag-fed semi auto is ideal. We have a special procedure for tube-fed rifles that simulates a reload, and will allow you to keep up.

We strongly recommend that whatever rifles you bring be fitted with an adjustable sling, since using a sling as a marksmanship aid is a big part of the instruction. The best type of sling for our method of shooting is a GI web sling, M1 and M-14 issue. They require 1 1/4" swivels. But any adjustable sling will work.

The great thing about Afton Appleseeds is that our host, Excalibur Sporting Goods, is a full-service gun shop. Mike, the owner, will have slings, studs, swivels, and Tech Sights for sale, and will even install them for you. You can buy your mags, ammo, etc. there... He even has complete Liberty Training Rifles for sale. He also provides a very reasonably-priced lunch and sells snacks and refreshments.

Come for the skills. Come for the experience. Come to honor the memory of our forefathers. Come to enjoy the camaraderie of some of the greatest fellow Americans you will ever meet. But most of all, JUST COME!!! And bring a friend.

If you fancy yourself a "Shooter" or a "Marksman", I double dog dare 'ya to go give this a try. Great for young and old. Build a foundation of solid fundamentals in your kids and maybe relearn them yourself.

Shooting fast is one thing, as long as you are shooting below Minute Of Barn Door...

Henschman: Any locations planned besides Afton the rest of this year?

The only other one we have a definitive date on is the Tri City Gun Club in Norman on October 15-16. I don't have the registration page open for it yet, though. We are working on other locations too.

Don't forget about the "Rifleman's Opportunity Card". Attend an Appleseed and Join the RWVA for $20 and you can keep attending Appleseed for free until you make Rifleman's score or the card expires. Joining the RWVA qualifies you to purchase a CMP M1-Garand Rifles for about 1/2 the going price. . . Delivered to your front door!

Any updates on the schedule for the rest of the year?

The Appleseed site only shows Afton events for the rest of the year.

I show 16 pre-registered so far, with several more walk-ons expected. There is still plenty of room for more, so get registered!

Yep, you heard it... qualify to buy M1 Garands and other surplus military rifles and parts at steeply discounted rates from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Don't miss out!

As for the rest of the year's schedule, so far it is all Afton events, plus one at Tri City Gun Club in Norman on October 15-16 (which isn't on the schedule yet). We are looking for additional locations for new events, so if anyone has land, or contacts at a gun club, we would welcome any help! All we need is a relatively flat piece of ground with a safe backstop -- we will bring the liability insurance, the targets, the instructors, and everything else. We will provide free labor to make improvements to any land donated to the cause, in order to make it suitable for a rifle range. Get in touch with me if you are interested.

Shooters, this should go without saying for Oklahoma in June, but please be prepared for warm and sunny weather! Bring plenty to drink, wear sunscreen, and bring a fold-up awning if you have one. Thankfully, we will have an air conditioned classroom for lunch and to take breaks in.

I definitely want to attend an Appleseed event but I need something to OKC. I'll be checking the schedule and At the very least looking towards the Tri-City event.
