I know the barrel nut is usually 35-40 ft lbs...but no more than 80...do you guys use the forumla to factory in the extension of the ar15 wrench or do you just set your torque wrench to x ft lbs and go? I saw a forumla to use with a ar15 wrench but cant find the forum i saw it in.

Hand tighten as best you can (this is really close to 30 ft lbs) then crank it down so your holes line up.

I'll admit to not using a torque wrench, just spin it on and crank it down. It's never caused me problems.

No real reason to use a torque wrench. If you get it hand tight then line up the next hole you're going to be in the range you need to be in. You will never get XX ft-lbs and a perfectly lined up gas hole.
