Here is a good book on understanding different types of radio comunications that can be real benifitual in an emergency. It ought to be in your library for future reference. Brad is an Extra Class ham radio operator, with over 35 years experience, lives right here in Oklahoma, and knows what he's talking about.

Additionally Brad teaches Ham Radio Classes and a seminar on Radio Preparedness, should anyone be interested, or should you just want to have him come speak to a group, I'm sure he would accomidate, especially if it's in the Tulsa Area.

I would highly recommend his book, it's a good read.

I've inserted a link below, or you can also just go to Amazon, and search, "Are You Radio Prepared" and it will come up. There is also a Kindle version available.

http://www.amazon.com/Are-Radio-Pre...1051&sr=8-1&keywords=are+you+radio+prepared#_

I hope this link works, I'm not to savy on this computer stuff, but also being a Ham Radio operator, I know radio's, and Brad's book is full of good information.

Thanks

Link works. Thanks Troutbum. :) This is a topic that gets very little attention but is a primary concern. I'd love to read any other input/thoughts/recommendations you have.

You know, I have my Gen license and a radio but have yet to speak a word on it. I'm very aware that the time to become proficient at something is BEFORE you need it but that danged radio intimidates the hell outta me ... :lookaroun

I'm gonna take a look at your links, Troutbum, and try again ... Thanks for the post!

I went all the way to Extra. I have a HF radio, a 2M base station, a 2M in my truck, two hand held ham radios. In addition I have a library of ham books covering operation, antennas, and building your own equipment. I also been picking up tools and meters to build antennas. I aslo have a set of Midland radios and a portable radio receiver that receives some ham, FM, and AM.

All i can do is operate a CB, but i dont even have that anymore.

It is so easy to get the ham ticket today, that there is no real excuse not to. Lots of help out here if you decide to go for it. Used equipment is available and works just as good as new.
I still have a couple of CBs just in case...
