I just bought a Remington 700 SPS DM in a .30-06. What type of scope would be best suited for this setup? It will be mainly used for deer hunting.

Thanks

Budget?

Deer hunting- Somewhere in the 3-9x or 3.5-10X range. For Leupold, go with the VXIII series and use it as a baseline for clarity and durability. True, there are better scopes out there, but the prices skyrocket quickly. Also, get decent bases and rings. Leupold dual dovetail bases/ rings will last the life of your scope and rifle and can be had in a fairly close match to your finish.

Get in position with a good stock weld and have someone move and elevate the scope into position to fit your eye, then figure on which height rings are needed and how far forward it needs to go. Lots of guys base ring height at random, or just enough for the scope to clear the barrel then live with uncomfortable position required.

Go to Basspro on a quiet day, try them all out on the test rifle stock, using a poorly lit object all the way across the store to view for clarity.

Whatever you do, don't go cheap. Even if you have to wait a while to afford a decent scope, it's money better spent as opposed to buying a Barska/ NC Star/ BSA/ Simmons or whatever and then ending up selling it at a big loss when you realize it pretty much sucks.
