Most states have a single tag on the back that is more than a regular one would be if you have a vanity plate. The system is a little different here but it ends up being the same cost in the end compared to other states, plus if someone takes your vanity plate your original one is still valid and can be used till a replacement comes in. If you hate the look of the new license plates and don't want to pay extra then get a handicap plate. I got one as my wife would constantly forget to hang the tag in the window if we stopped somewhere, was always worried about getting a ticket over that one but got lucky that it had not happened. The handicap plate cost me ten bucks initially and then once a year I just stop in and re-register it with the handicap window tag in hand... When I did it the guy waiting to do some stuff had a dumbfounded look on his face when I walked out without paying and they didn't chase after me. I know it sucks to have tags expire but it happens, not worth crying over spilled milk is it? There is a simple solution to the problem... When you are doing your monthly light check to make sure that all the headlights, marker lights, license plate lights and tail lights are working you look at the tag expiration. If you do not do a monthly check then before long you will end up with another ticket due to a light being out. When cold snaps hit you should be doing another one since that is when bulbs tend to blow out.
