birdcage flash hider .223 and carbon

I have shot many .223 rounds from my bolt guns and many rounds from many guns and never seen what I got the other day.

My .223 AR15 got a build up of carbon right on the face of the muzzle .
Could this have happened from shooting with the birdcage on?

Just wondering..I will be shooting with it off and see what happens.
Wonder about accuracy also.
Less than 50 rounds shot through it.

Yes i have cleaned it a few times but I just removed the birdcage today.

I think so. I removed a FH and saw exactly what you described. I doubt the carbon would affect accuracy any more than the FH does on its own.

perfectly normal effect. You find it in the gas block and the carrier key

carrier key was shiny clean inside.. Tiny little bit of carbon behind the rings on the bolt assembly.
Just wiped off with cleaner.. the muzzle needed scraped off.

I actually find cleaning and taking this AR15 apart is a little bit on the fun side. New Toy syndrome I suppose.

Mine does it real bad with a can on the end of it. I take my bird cages off immediately so Ive never seen that.

I suppose i will need to mark where my muzzle brake is on my .308 and .223 as they are clocked at a certain spot.
If I clock them different I am afraid my POI will change..This is why i did not take the birdcage flash hider off the AR.. was thinking POI will change.

Hate to have to re-sight every time I go out and shoot.

I just run thread protectors on everything. I have seen instances where bird cages can make a group open up. Sometimes surprisingly so. One of which was one of mine.

Yea I do not dig the birdcage.I have a Jerry Miculek brake on a savage bolt .223 and really like it.

I have one too. It works really well but its stupid loud. I never shoot a 223 without a can anymore so I'm giving mine to steeldingers if he ever gets ungrounded or whatevers going on with him.

Carbon buildup is quite normal.
