Then don’t expect to get equipped at places like Walmart or Academy. I’ve never been to Summit, so I can’t speak about them, but Backwoods is a decent local store. Most of my stuff is bought via cyber shopping based on lots of research and a good deal of personal needs assessment. Most stuff I’ve been very satisfied with, but some other things not so much so they were sent on down the road. I tend to look for products that are meant for mountaineering or expeditions and for the high quality backpacking market. Another category I look in for items that I feel need to have greater durability is companies that manufacture military gear upgrades, not military surplus. I try to balance my available dollars by creating an overlapping system that fulfills my basic needs given whatever the situation. By doing it that way if one layer fails the next is available to pick up the short fall. In other words, whether it is my get home bag, or BOB, or my home, everything overlaps to fulfill the same basic functions. Those needs are: 1. Security 2. Shelter 3. Water 4. Food Just a few of the places I have purchased from: http://www.kifaru.net/ http://www.moontrail.com/home.php http://www.altrec.com/ http://www.mountaingear.com/webstore/ http://www.rei.com/ This is just a sample of the places I’ve bought from in recent years, but if you’re looking for something specific, please ask.
