In this case, the Republican is also a dirtbag. He was the first one to speak, answering the young lady's question with an answer that they weren't there to protect people from violent attacks. He said they were there to help the students and teacher from "feeling uncomfortable" because a student was carrying a firearm.

The man is a weasel.

Yep. You guys are right. I didn't have the luxury of hearing much more than just a short part of the hearings (roughly 3 minutes}, so I missed on the sarcasm. He (the Republican) was on Glenn Beck today with a short interview and explained that they had to listen to "hours" of testimony from anti-gun folks saying that they wouldn't be comfortable with someone being able to protect themselves. Thus, he gave the sarcastic answer and I missed it entirely.

My bad for calling him a weasel.

On the other hand, he was asked by Glenn as to what was happening in Colorado, what with the bills being so poorly written that pump shotguns would be illegal because of the "possibility" of expanding their round capacity. He told Glenn that a few well-heeled folks are donating heavily to the Democratic Party in Colorado and that the legislature had redistricted the state to "water down" the influence of the Republican voters in the state.

Ok, heard the republican CO state senator who said those remarks on Glenn Becks radio show and he explained it. He was trying to make a joke/smartass of the comments made to him earlier by anti-gunners saying they don't want to feel intimidated by the woman by her having a weapon on campus. He said he is one of the 14 of 16 needed to kill this bill, there are 12 repubs and 2 dems, and they need to 2 more dems to kill this anti gun bill. I for one have a twisted sense of humor and missed the viciousness of the comment.

In all honesty without knowing all the specifics of the attack there is no way to know if a gun would have helped. Now would having a gun increase the odds of not being a victim of sexual assault? Yes. Just like most other gun related arguments it is hard to get an exact number of attempted sexual assaults that failed due to the victim having a gun, or ones that succeeded even though the victim had a gun. We all know that having a gun and having the training, mental toughness, and time to use it are completely different.
