Even before “the kids these days” showed up it’s easy to outshine the competition. It’s surprising how many grown men don’t know how to write a resume. Or wear a clean pair of pants to an interview. Hell, my last job I had a coworker who I am pretty sure couldn’t read. Our “shop Mexican” (every heavy equipment or truck shop has one) could barely speak English and would help this grown man read. I’ve seen construction workers, oilfield workers, truck drivers, mechanics that would just get up and leave once they hit their 8 or 10 or 12 hours for the day and leave; unwilling to spend the extra 30 minutes on the clock to finish what they were doing. One thing that I have realized changing careers is how people have such a utter lack of soft skills as well. Just showing some initiative and developing some soft skills will create a large advantage for kids showing up in the workforce.
