My current advice to people I talk to about engineering degrees is if possible, do something in high school or immediately after that can make a decent income (vs a high school diploma) like CAD, welding, mechanic, programming, or similar. Any of those are useful in engineering, and can make your during-college career at least pay better than McD's. Then do pre-engineering at a JuCo or local state school and get an associates in that. If necessary, (I'd even argue if at all possible do this) take a break for a year or so afterwards to pay off any debt accrued during that time. My brother did this at Rose State, and they have a program where as long as your grades stay above a certain GPA, tuition is free. Then finish the bachelors at a 4 year college with a strong engineering program. All the relevant work experience will put you a step ahead of other 4 year graduates, and you can do that with little to no debt.
