You need to get practice. I thought shooting steel would be boring..My first plate at 500 yards was a different experience for me than shooting paper. I see the plate through the Tasco scope, ease into the trigger on the .308, theround goes off .. the recoil pushed me back..I get back on target just before the round hits the steel. I see a poof of smoke which is the bullet vaporizing on the AR500 plate. About 1 second later I hear Ting! Pretty cool indeed. I shot my .223 savage axis at 500 many times..It has shot bullets closer than 1" apart and widest is 5" on the money. That is with 1 homemade bag rested on top of my 95 corolla and 55 gr v max hand loaded into Federal cases. My 10fp .308 will shoot under 5" at 500 as will my $200 mossberg 100 atr all have cheap scopes Tasco target varmit 6-24 and centerpoint 4-16 power. I have even hit the steel at 500 with the 30-06 and cast loads exiting the barrel at 1400 fps centerpoint scope set on 4 power. Build some accurate ammo learn to shoot. The 6.5's look very promsing. I keep going back to the old stuff .223, .308, 30-06. I have a .243 and just have not stretched it's legs yet. There are online trajectory calculators that will show you things about wind drift etc with velocity and BC and bullet weight plugged in. I found my 55 v max does better than 69gr bullets in my .223, based on velocity from my gun and the most accurate loads I can build for each bullet. The 155gr trumps the 168 and 175 in my .308 for 500 yard shooting.
