Here is a sad story, I had a guy who was late habitually for work (military), shirked his duties and in general was a good-off. I counseled him and sent him to the First Sergeant who asked me what I wanted them to do with him. I said scare him but good. So I went with him to see the First Sgt and Commander and he was read his Miranda Rights and started tearing up and shaking. After we returned to the office within a few days he was one of the best troops I ever had and he thanked me for straightening him out. Mad eme feel like I'd accomplished something! The sad part is that he came to me one day and asked for the afternoon off because one of his buddies was killed in a car wreck and his wife was grieving. I said sure, go ahead and take the afternoon off. The next day I heard that he'd got to drinking and knew he was in no condition to be his own designated driver so he had a buddy drive his little English convertible and he rand a red light and another car broadsided them and my guy was critically injured. He was in the hospital in a coma for a couple of days and then they decided to going to discharge him to the Veterans Hospital but before that occurred, he passed away. I still blame myself for giving him the afternoon off.
