Excellent story dealing with what happens when emp hits, the protagonist lives in North Carolina west of Ashville.
It's well worth reading, I'd check to see if the metro library has it first but it is worth buying.

Sorry for being slightly off topic, but did you know the north koreans have a satellite that passes over north america every 12hours. What if it was a nuke and they emp'd us?
I think it is unlikely that North Korea could deploy nukes from a satellite. They barely have ballistic missile technology so them being able to put one on a satellite in space that could target the US just seems a little out of their league...I hope so at least. EMPs are scary things.
Building a nuke is one thing, little boy weighed about 4 1/2 tons.
Building an accurate missile/launch system is another..
One that North Korea doesn't play in.
They would have to reduce the weight and scale the size to fit within the nose cone of a missile.
Their satellite which is reportedly spinning out of control weighs 100 kilograms.
220 pounds vs roughly 9000 pounds means the ability to put a small piece of junk into orbit doesn't directly translate into the ability to place a multi ton object up there to rain terror down on anyone below.
The current best estimates indicate,
If they manage to build a small enough nuke.
If they can get the rocket to work. Several of theirs exploded on the pad and shortly after launch.
If they can control the destination over thousands of miles.
Their current generation rocket could strike most of.......
Alaska.
Nuking Alaska would be mostly pointless.
They land one nuke.
They learn the exact meaning of hell on earth when they are annihilated.
Conservatives will demand their destruction for violating our sovereignty.
Liberals will demand their destruction for killing the seals, polar bears and melting the pristine snow somewhere in the wilderness of Alaska.

and what are the odds of a maniacal, spoiled brat, little, piss-ant dictator doing something THAT stupid just to prove to the world or his "loyal" subjects what a great leader he is?
They (or Iran and Macmunutjob) may not have the technology NOW, but that doesn't mean they aren't trying to build or buy something surplus from Russia. And if/when acquired, they would NEVER launch.
