The EPA tried to ban lead in sporting goods (including fishing gear) back in the 1970's. Lots of folks squawked and they dropped the idea.

Just another version back door people control, through gun control, IMO.

Time to squawk again, politely and often.

I left a comment. I would suggest we all do and tell our friends as well. This is an unreasonable intrusion into the second amendment rights of economically challenged hunters, sportsmen and others who cannot afford loaded ammunition and must reload. It will drive the cost of bullets (used for reloading) through the roof.

My comment said as much.

Nice letter by the NRA. There has been a lot of NRA bashing on OKshooters, but we all need to be NRA members. It may not be perfect but it's an ally in keeping our RKBA. So I urge all NRA naysayers to please at least renew your memberships to the NRA.
The more members it has the stronger it gets.

EPA Considering Ban on Traditional Ammunition - Take Action Now
August 25, 2010 By Larry Keane View Comments
765Share

All Gun Owners, Hunters and Shooters:

With the fall hunting season fast approaching, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Lisa Jackson, who was responsible for banning bear hunting in New Jersey, is now considering a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) – a leading anti-hunting organization – to ban all traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, a law in which Congress expressly exempted ammunition. If the EPA approves the petition, the result will be a total ban on all ammunition containing lead-core components, including hunting and target-shooting rounds. The EPA must decide to accept or reject this petition by November 1, 2010, the day before the midterm elections.

Today, the EPA has opened to public comment the CBD petition. The comment period ends on October 31, 2010.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) - the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry - urges you to submit comment to the EPA opposing any ban on traditional ammunition. Remember, your right to choose the ammunition you hunt and shoot with is at stake.

The EPA has published the petition and relevant supplemental information as Docket ID: EPA-HQ-OPPT-2010-0681. If you would like to read the original petition and see the contents of this docket folder, please click here. In order to go directly to the ‘submit a comment’ page for this docket number, please click here.

NSSF urges you to stress the following in your opposition:

* There is no scientific evidence that the use of traditional ammunition is having an adverse impact on wildlife populations.

* Wildlife management is the proper jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the 50 state wildlife agencies.

* A 2008 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on blood lead levels of North Dakota hunters confirmed that consuming game harvested with traditional ammunition does not pose a human health risk.

* A ban on traditional ammunition would have a negative impact on wildlife conservation. The federal excise tax that manufacturers pay on the sale of the ammunition (11 percent) is a primary source of wildlife conservation funding. The bald eagle’s recovery, considered to be a great conservation success story, was made possible and funded by hunters using traditional ammunition – the very ammunition organizations like the CBD are now demonizing.

* Recent statistics from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service show that from 1981 to 2006 the number of breeding pairs of bald eagles in the United States increased 724 percent. And much like the bald eagle, raptor populations throughout the United States are soaring.

Steps to take:

1. Submit comment online to the EPA.

2. Contact Lisa Jackson directly to voice your opposition to the ban:

I'm opposed to the proposed lead ban because of 2nd Amendment reasons but I'm also concerned about wildlife and the effects of lead in some situations.

Contrary to what NSSF implies, some lead ammunition can poison some wildlife in certain situations. Shotgun pellets look almost exactly like the seeds that many birds eat and so are ingested by them. Lead bullets left in gutpiles are eaten by scavenging birds. Steps have already been taken to try to reduce these issues - steel shot requirement for waterfowl areas and lead bullet exclusion zones to protect condors (I know - "Who cares about condors?!" I do and you should too because hawks and eagles are probably likewise affected) . There are scientists studying the effects of lead on a range of species and based on what they find it may be necessary to further restrict the use of lead shot and lead bullets for certain purposes or in certain areas.

In a few odd cases, lead on shooting ranges may have contaminated ground water or surface waters. This can happen when soil pH is acidic and depth to ground water is shallow or surface waters are nearby. The solution in these cases is to use limestone to raise soil pH and keep the berms and other areas well vegetated to reduce erosion.

Voluntary changes in these areas by shooters and the shooting sports industry would be far preferable to government imposed regulations. Denial that there is any problem at all is going weaken the case of those opposed to the ban.

Pruitt Would Challenge Petition to Ban Lead Ammunition

AG candidate says leftists groups attempting to use EPA to ban lead in ammunition and fishing tackle shows need for Federalism Unit in AG’s office

LAWTON – (Aug 27) Republican candidate for attorney general, Scott Pruitt, said today the recent petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity and several other groups with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban lead in ammunition and fishing tackle is a direct assault on the freedoms guaranteed Oklahomans under the Second Amendment.

While visiting the Lawton area today, Pruitt said, “The attempts to ban lead in ammunition and fishing tackle is a back-door attack on basic freedoms we enjoy as Oklahomans and our way of life. Should the Environmental Protection Agency pursue this ban, as attorney general, I will do all I can to stop Washington bureaucrats like the EPA.”

Pruitt contends there are several options the office of attorney general can and should pursue against the EPA. Pruitt said filing a brief on behalf of Oklahomans during the EPA’s public commentary period would be the first step. More importantly, Pruitt said he would work to build coalitions of attorney generals across the country who would join with him in pushing back the overreach of the federal government in numerous areas including healthcare, immigration and unreasonable environmental constraints that not only would tank Oklahoma’s economy, but impede the rights of Oklahoma to set its own policies.

“This week, we also saw the EPA delay the announcement of draconian ozone standards they seek to put in place to advance a leftist-environmental agenda until after the November elections. This is the politics of Washington bureaucrats trying to hide their intentions from the people of Oklahoma, and it’s got to be stopped.”Pruitt said as attorney general one of the first initiatives of his administration will be to prioritize resources in the AG’s office, and dedicate a team to defend against abuses of power by the federal government that impact Oklahomans, “I will assign attorneys in the AG’s office whose primary responsibility is to determine how the office can and should push back against Washington. Whether its related to property rights, the right to keep and bear arms, the right to educate our children, or related to the first amendment, the attorney general must have resources and leaders internal to the office fighting those battles every day,” said Pruitt.
