when you have these handgun matches, what kind of distances are you shooting from?
A. want to sight my gun and practice
B. have watched some people practice
and they seem awfully close to the targets.

we talkin' 5 yards? 10-15 yards or more like 20-50 yards?

For the Pro Am, it is 7 yards min.

In IDPA we always do a minimum of 10 yards for safety. Some of the Pro-Am steel is at a pretty steep angle, which helps with splatter.
