HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The first change in state law in direct response to Sandy Hook occurred during Wednesday night's special session.

And Thursday lawmakers announced a roster of eight proposed changes in the state's gun laws.

The proposal would immediately expand the definition of Assault Weapon under current state law to apply to firearms which show one particular physical trait, as opposed to two, like the presence of a pistol grip beneath the action of the weapon.

And despite the fact that there are perhaps thousands of legal handguns in the state with a greater than 10 cartridge magazine capacity, this proposal would prohibit the sale and possession of any magazine with a capacity of over 10.

The proposal would also call for a 50 percent sales tax on all ammunition, permits would be required to purchase ammunition, and the online purchase of ammunition would be prohibited.

Clearly passing this law will prevent any future incidents like Sandy Hook from ever happening again. I can't imagine why anyone would be opposed to it. It is well documented that weapons with a pistol grip and flash hider are more deadly than those without. Also, making the possession of magazines with over 10 rounds illegal certainly won't create a law enforcement problem. I am sure everyone will simply turn their high capacity magazines over to the proper authorities.

These are the types of common sense gun laws we need to enact. There is not a person that can argue with the sound reasoning of this proposal.

What a horribly written article. The change in law was not related to firearms. The change was related to school security funding....buried at the bottom of the article.

The rest of the stuff related to fireams is only in proposal form, not even in a draft bill...but they put that at the top of the article to make it look like something is being done.

I think they ought to just make it illegal to shoot kids while they are in school.

Yeah, no one needs more than 10 rounds.

Several points in that, if passed will be found uncostitutional, because they encompass something that is already in possession and within the state/county. We live in a common law society, this type of law is prohibited. Now they could require registry, and if you had it without the registration that would be a legal loophole for them to take you to jail...
