It was mentioned in the link that the Barb was scrapped, but deserved to have been preserved. To give a little perspective, the "Big E" was also scrapped, after it arguably won the war in the Pacific.
The "greatest generation" didn't give a rat's rump about tributes and memorials. My late father-in-law, who fought from just after D-Day to the end of the war in Europe, thought the Iwo flag raising sculpture at Arlington was more than adequate as a WW II memorial. That tough old SOB burst into tears when he saw it the first time. When he saw the plans for the current WW II memorial, he was aghast. He thought it was 'way too much.
