Agree 100% about shopping around. The unit I have now is a 14 seer and it's an off brand (Ameristar) but made by Ingersol Rand who also makes Trane. But a 2 ton unit is about 1600 with both the indoor and outdoor sections with the electric heat coils. https://www.nationalairwarehouse.com/2-ton-ameristar-14-seer-r410a-air-conditioner-split-system.html If all you need is a compressor changed out you are looking at around 1k for a 2 ton unit like that. https://www.nationalairwarehouse.com/wholesale-air-conditioners/condensers/2-ton-ameristar-14-seer-r410a-air-conditioner-condenser.html It comes pre charged for like a 30 foot lineset or something like that so honestly pretty easy to install if you have a vacuum pump and the ability to solder the ends. I watched the guys do ten or twelve of them in one day when I got around to going outside. And the units are warrantied for 5 years unless you "register" and then it's 10. Sucker is a lot quieter than anything else I have come across and it's an off brand but it's the same stuff as the other ones, just comes with a different tag on the front. Plus you could easily upgrade to a heat pump.... https://www.nationalairwarehouse.com/wholesale-heat-pumps/condensers/l/brand:ameristar.html
