Last WWI Veteran turns 110

Frank Buckles is the last remaining U.S. WWI veteran, and he turned 110 today.

Buckles' career might even be more amazing than his age however. The veteran, who served in WWI (and was dragged into WWII), is also the last remaining doughboy. Buckles joined the military at the age of 16, according to CNN.

During WWI, the decorated veteran served as a member of the ambulance corps, evacuating bodies from the battlefield - a particularly gruesome task during the first World War. If that wasn't brave enough, Buckles survived three years in a Japanese POW camp as a civillian after the shipping freighter he was working on was captured, according to CNN.

It'll be like that with the WWII vets before too long.

My heart goes out for all the soldiers. LightningCrash is right, the WWII vets are becoming scarce. I work at the VA hospital in Muskogee and the WWII vets are not nearly as common as they used to be. The Korean vets ranks are starting to thin as well. Every war is bad but the stories that have come from WWI, WWII and Korea seem to be the worst. God bless Frank Buckles and all those that were willing to sacrifice their very lives for our freedom.

Heard an earlier interview with him, he didn't "lie" about his age he misrepresented his age.

Other people could live 110 years and not experience as much as I'm sure he did in a matter of only several years.
