He was complaining about it on the radio today. His thoughts were that he thought the SS would appreciate more armed officers being present.

He is probably not aware of what the SS can bring to the table in short order.
.

Indeed. He's certainly not aware that Secret Service's plans involve far more than just having people with guns standing around. It's an orchestrated machine, if aren't a part of it you're a target or an obstacle to bypass.

Back in the day, when I worked in TV news, I covered appearances by then-Vice President George HW Bush (1988, while I was in college,) Sen. Bob Dole (1996) and Pres. Bill Clinton (also 1996.) in all three instances, even as a TV news photographer, I had to pass through security. In 1988, all I had to do was turn on my camera and VTR and prove they were operational and not disguised bombs. In 1996, I had to go through metal detectors and have my equipment verified as operational before entering the venues (both were outdoor events.) I'm sure that the detectors were provided by the Secret Service themselves.

I'm so old, the last time I covered a president as a media representative was when Jimmy Carter was President. All they did back then was be sure you didn't have any peanuts in your pockets.

He said they offered to check his weapon, but he insisted that state law allowed him to have his gun at the event.

You know, it would have been so simple to just say "OK" , check the gun, and stay for the event.
He was just a spectator, not part of the security detail.

When I was on active duty, we had a retired GI working as an OK deputy wear his gun into the commissary on Altus AFB to do some grocery shopping, and he was also escorted off base. Local law enforcement can enter the base armed WHEN ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS ONLY. Like Glocktogo said "Federal law trumps state law" :pms2:
