Maybe you folks can help me out. I've been searching and I'm getting nowhere. I'm looking for a small pocket type handgun that I can have with me when working out at the hunting lease. Something small that doesn't need a holster, but large enough to defend myself should some crazed animal run up. I have a Bersa Thunder 380, a gold plated (not really) Lorcin 380, and those are to bulky/heavy for what I'm wanting. My Ruger P97DC is too much also. My pops has a KelTec P11 9mm that I don't like cause the top of the grip is somewhat squared and blisters my thumb knuckle. His LCP just seems like it wants to jump out of my hand. I thought I had the perfect one picked out, a Kahr CM9, that was until I read about how you have to chamber the first round with the slide open and then insert mag. I want one I can just pull out of my pocket, put one in the chamber quickly, and go from there. It doesn't really matter 380 or 9, like I said I already have 380s but wouldn't mind adding a 9mm to the collection, but that means another caliber to buy. So with all that rambling, does anyone have any other suggestions to look at? Nothing over $350-$400. No revolvers.

How about a S&W 442 with +P ammo? I don't really think id rely on a .380 for critters. A Shield also fits in a back pocket decently, just not concealed.

I know you mention that you don't want a revolver.....but, from what I hear you saying....a small feather lite revolver is what you've described wanting and needing. 38 or 357 rounds, safe (only limited due to no holster) and quick and easy.

What if you don't have time to put one in the chamber? get the kahr and keep it hot, or how about a sig P-238 I think it's the easiest slide to rack period. I have Kel-Tec 380 that fits almost anywhere is light and shoots good

Not sure I understand?

•Q. My firearm fails to chamber the first round when I pull back the slide and release it. What is wrong?

A. It is likely you are either failing to pull the slide fully back or you are riding the slide as you release it. We recommend that you lock back the slide, insert the clip, and release the slide with the slide stop. This will require that you carry a load in the chamber for self defense purposes. However, the passive safety system will prevent the pistol from firing unless the trigger is pulled, even if the gun is dropped. If you would prefer not to carry a round in the chamber, you may remove a round from the magazine. This alters the angle of the bullet and will allow it to chamber even if you ride the slide.

Under $400 and no revolvers doesn't leave you much wiggle room. KelTecs suck, so they're out. Maybe you can pick up a used Ruger LCP or S&W Bodyguard 380.

I kinda shy away from revolvers cause I've never owned one, and I shot a friends once and the grip felt small and akward. But I see they make slightly larger rubber-like grips (Houge) for some, so I may look into some.

I guess my question would be, why aren't you carrying your pistol loaded? I would never carry a Kahr or any other modern firearm any other way.
