Could be a lot worse. Leave outta San Fran to Phoenix. Get into Phoenix at noon after driving straight through leaving the Bay area around 7PM and being up since around 8AM. Eat sleep, get up leave out of Phoenix at 9AM and make it to Guthrie straight through. Trip was about 1750 miles the way I went since I went around LA rather than through. Did I mention that I had a dog with me who wanted to stop at every tree he saw to go mark his expanded territory? The last time I was out there I came back via Reno and then Highway 50 through Nevada and Utah with the same dog. Through Colorado to Denver then down to Pueblo, Guymon and then Guthrie. That was 1850 miles and I stopped twice to sleep, once about 15 miles from the Nevada-Utah state line on Highway 50 and once about ten miles south of La Junta CO. Got about 5 hours of sleep each time in the back seat of the pickup. One complete day of downtime sounds like a dream and I am sure having a second person capable of driving for even a few hours would make a huge difference. I drove out to CA as well but did stop in Phoenix for a few days each time so I don't count that as a long trip. Another one that sucked was driving from Lawton, OK to New York City as well as the return trip. Stopped to sleep once on the way out and back at a rest area in the car with my wife. Thankfully no dog at the time though still almost 1600 miles each way. The way I look at it is if you can spare a couple days for some time with the family JUMP ON IT. You only live once and the time with the kids in the car will build memories to last a lifetime. Good or bad you will ALWAYS remember the trips, but I bet you won't remember what you and the kids did last wednesday ten or twenty years down the road.
