Mossberg 500: Receiver tang safety, 10yr warranty, made in the United States of America.
Maverick 88: different safety, 1yr warranty, made in the United Mexican States.

Most parts are compatible between the two.

Grew up with a 500 in 20ga but this Thanksgiving shot my older bro's 88 in 12. Seemed to be about the same from a handling and shooting standpoint. I have since moved on to an 870 and seem to like it better than either of the others. Think they are all good, just depends on what kind of deal you can make IMHO.

I believe some parts in the 88 are still made in mexico but the shotgun is built in Texas. The newer 88's are suppost to be better than the older ones. If you get a fairly newer 88 it would be a better shotgun. The 500 has better parts in the reciever and is made and assembled in usa.

I prefer the safety on the 88. Almost all of their parts are interchangable. I added an ATI stock yesterday. I order a couple other shell adding options, the thing is a blasty to shoot.
