During the George W Bush administration, there was a program in northern Virginia that actually enforced the federal law against felons in possession of firearms.

Does anyone remember what this operation was called? If a felon was found to be in possession of a firearm he was arrested for that and turned over to the federal authorities, who charged him with violating the 1968 GCA. Quite a few of them were put away for five years and the region's homicide rate dropped significantly.

Dims will call it the "It was a Republican President's program, aint no way in hell we are going to do it" plan.
If memory serves, the program was terminated due to the disparate impact it had on certain ethnic groups.

But that, however true, does not answer the original question.
