Why are leading republicans undercutting the President in standing up to Mexico?

Genuine principles against taxation (doubtful), Representing business and jobs in their state which would be impacted (possible) or because of the Mexican money flowing their way disguised as contributions and support from K Street lobbyists (possbile)?

The public split and looming standoff over 5% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico revealed a fundamental divergence in values between the president and his party. Trump uses tariffs as leverage to get what he wants — in this case to force Mexico to do more to halt illegal immigration. For Republicans, tariffs are counter to firmly rooted orthodoxy and viewed as nothing more than taxes they strenuously oppose.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said with understatement, “There is not much support in my conference for tariffs, that’s for sure.”

It really shouldn't surprise anyone that they're sill Republicans.

The Democrats are against national security simply because trump wants it and they hate trump so badly they'll hurt the country (and us) by resisting anything Trump comes with regardless of national security. Then the Republicans as you guys say are self-defeating themselves by disagreeing with Trump in order to win the next election. The fact of the matter is that the majority of American citizens know we have a border problem and that our Border Patrol is overwhelmed by the masses coming to our borders and the citizens want migrants stopped. If we don't have border control these illegals are going to come in, we as taxpayers get to support them in the form of housing, medical care, Food Stamps, transportation on city conveyances and no doubt crime will go up as well. So we get a double-whammy-paying for necessities and then paying for increased police protection, larger and more prisons and the list goes on. Politicians need to get off their concern for reelection, hatred for Trump and concentrate on the betterment of the country, if they don't we are all going to suffer.

Within hours of Trump announcing the tariff timetable the Mexican trade commission set up meetings. They have a whole lot more to lose than the US does.
