Smith model 19-4 K or N frame?

How do I tell. I am new to revolvers but my friend said I should want one. I was told it was a k frame but when I took the grips off it has a big N stamped on it. It has a 6" barrel and is a penned and recessed model.

You can tell by the fact that it is a M19...Sounds like you have a very smart friend.

The N means its nickeled, model 19's are K frames

N stamped on the grip frame can also denote a trip back to S&W, or other things people have not deciphered.

All the 19s are K frames, kinda lightweight for .357M.
If you plan on a lot of 357 shooting, get an L frame. It can take a lot more punishment than the K.
