I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the S&W EZ when your mom gets to use it. My hands are pretty well used up too and I've been tempted to get a 22 for carry.
I got the EZ in .380 for my mom. It's the only pistol slide she can even rack. It's easy to load. The magazine has tabs to pull to depress the spring. The trigger is light and not hard for her to pull. She really likes it.

YES ! the S&W EZ 380 is what I finally landed for my wife. I had a Walther PPK/S 380 but it was really hard to rack for her. The S&W Ladysmith with 38 spl revolver just beat her up too much. Get some Black Hills Honey Badger 380 ammo for the EZ and you have a pretty effective defensive gun.
