Right now Trump is listening to Peter Navaro.
Navaro is something of an economic quack who advocates building an economic wall around the US.
That's the long game.
Economic isolation.

Riiiiiight lol. Kind of like considering a solution to the immigration problem, or enforcing immigration laws equals racism or an anti-immigration policy. Paranoid delusions from the left aside. Would you say that the U.S. was engaged in fair trade practices previously?

Since the US subsidizes the ethanol industry and has imposed a 25% tariff on ethanol imported from Brazil not all that long ago, along with our 25% tariff on imported light trucks and SUVs I would say that we are not exactly pure on the subject of "fair trade".

A lot of this "they cheat on trade" is rhetoric designed to stir feelings of resentment that can be exploited for political purposes.

Trump and Sanders Have agreed on a lot of things. Especially earlier in this century. Trump has changed his mind about gun control, abortion and single payer health insurance, but at least he hasn't let his hair go.

Do you have amnesia?
Do you not remember the Sanders/Trump trade policy. LOL

Nope. I guess the irony is lost on you? YOU just said it was "political rhetoric designed to stir up feelings" and yes you were saying him and Trump were similar on trade philosophies. Now that Trump is acting on it, you act like a huge trade deficit isn't there?

Pesky facts.

I didn't say there isn't a large trade deficit.
Try another straw man.

As stated earlier, when push came to shove, Sanders grabbed his ankles and let the DNC do as they please. Now Trump may have changed his policies, but it's obvious it was in the right direction for his voters. Wouldn't you know it, he's kept a majority of his promises since coming in to office. I'll respect that Bernie has said the same thing for years..... but he sure won't act when the time comes.

And, of course, trade policy is one area where they continue to share their big gobment socialist agenda. Fair enough. Fair enough. I'm not saying otherwise. Bernie was just talking. The time has come and Trump's doing.
