The book is a good read, best I recall the movie held fairly close to it. I read We Were Soldiers before the movie came out, I thought it was REALLY close to the book.

We had the same problems in Iraq with unarmored vehicles. We'd probably still have them, until an E-4 asked SecDef Rumsfeld why he rode around in armored vehicles and everyone else didn't. Rumsfeld answered,

“You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.”. But I think that was the push to get body armor for everyone and armored vehicles.​
