Tromix hasn't been to a Tulsa gunshow in over 10 years, but we will be there this weekend.

We'll have a pile of big bore AR-15 uppers, barrels, bolts, receivers, and all the other miscellaneous parts to put one together. Calibers include .475 Tremor, .458 SOCOM, 450 Bushmaster, and the brand new high speed .375 SOCOM. If you are interested in a big bore, come by and see us.

Tell us more about this 375 SOCOM.
Like parent cartridge, bullet weight, average speed, compared to this other cartridge.

The .375 SOCOM uses a .458 SOCOM case necked down to .375 caliber. It will fire a 200gr bullet at 2400fps from an 18" barrel. We've shot it quite a bit faster than that, but 2400fps is at reasonable pressure levels. A 225gr bullet runs about 2300fps. A typical .458 SOCOM load tosses a 300gr bullet at 1800fps which really limits it's range to about 150 yards whereas the .375 can run out to 250 yards or so. Powders that work well in the .375 SOCOM include AA2520, AR-COMP, VV N530, IMR4895, VV N135, VV N140, Varget, Re-15.

You mentioned comparing it to "this other cartridge"......I assume you mean the ill fated .375 Reaper. The Reaper is a much smaller case (.473") than the SOCOM (.540"). It only holds about 40gr of H2O whereas the SOCOM holds nearly 60 grains, which is on par with the full length .308 Winchester capacity-wise. Cartridges based on the .308 case have never been very successful in the AR platform most notably due to magazine issues. The .308 size cases tend to Stack-And-A-Half in the magazine, causing the sidewalls to bulge out and feed unreliably due to some rounds feeding from under a feed lip and others trying to squirt out in the center between the lips. The SOCOM case is large enough that it feeds perfectly from a single stack in the center of a standard GI magazine.

Factory .375 SOCOM ammo is currently available from Strike Force Ammunition and will be available from SBR (Sold through MidwayUSA) at the end of the year. Dies are available from Hornady, CH4D, and Tromix.
