Is a turkey thats been kept in a freezer for a year safe for my family to eat, or should I take it to my in-laws just in case???

It should be fine. I've had one in the freezer for a year, and its what is going on the table.
My wife's company gives out a turkey every year, and we cook it the following year.

Look into brining the turkey before cooking it. You will never have it another way if you do.
