I'm sorry, but that image of a plane on the side of the ship seems odd. Wouldn't the "crumpling" of the airplane make a mark that didn't look so much like just a small mark that is almost the identical as just the "leading edge" of the aircraft? Especially so of the wings?
Looks like someone darkened the imprint but supposedly the plane just barely made it to the cruiser before dropping into the ocean. Here is the real photo. Plane may have been on fire too before hitting the side.

I'm really doubting it hit with much force. It was probably doing about 20 MPH
