It is one of the things that will change you forever. It's really weird, when a Marine meets another Marine. It's almost like he's already a friend. I don't see this in any other service. (I am not putting down the Service's) I'm just making an observation.. A Anonymous Canadian phrased it best.
Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings
I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it were
some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost every-
thing they own, making themselves up to look like insane
fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping
their Commandant almost as if he were a God, and making weird
animal noises like a band of savages. They'll fight like rabid dogs
at a drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the
cockiest SOB's I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths
and drink well beyond man's normal limits, but their high spirits
and sense of brotherhood set them apart and, generally speaking,
the United States Marines I've come in contact with are the most
professional sodiers and finest men I have ever had the pleasure
to meet.
I remember the first time our drill instructors called us Marines after weeks of being reminded we would never be so honored. The history and tradition of the Corps is unsurpassed and taught to every recruit in basic. It's a standard that was set by those before us and a minimum we must maintain. Our shared experiences, forged in common difficulties, bring us closer than most brothers. A brotherhood difficult to explain yet never so real.
My brother and one of my best friends were both in the Marine Corps. I'm not sure either of them have ever tried to describe this fraternity to me, but you can just kind of sense it in their demeanor, when they just talk about the Marine Corps, or especially meet another Marine when you're with them.
