Read another story today that had more details and made it seem even more implausible.

She said she went back to try to retrieve her husband after he was shot and fell of his jet ski. While she was trying to pull him out of the water the pirates cruised by pointing guns at her, but left her alone. She took off after she couldn't pull the body onto her jet ski....then the pirates started shooting again as she took off. Hmmm....so they kill a guy, cruise by and leave a witness unharmed but start shooting at her later once she's already gone?

Maybe they were just wanting a challenge so they let her take off and then started shooting again.
