Ok, my mistake. First video I watched reported he shot the tree branch to free the Eagle. I guess I need to follow more than one news source.
The news report I saw on tv said he shot through the branch and showed the branch where it had been severed with lead marks from the bullets.
This video shows the branch at 1:30 and he says it took 150 shots because he had to clear out some branches.
