Find a used Mexican made 4 String Fender P bass. Go flat wound strings and Seymore Duncan pickups if you want to sound like Steve Harris, regular strings and EMG pickups if you want to sound like Geezer Butler, otherwise they all sound the same lol. Can probably find a new one of those for just over $500.
Squire and Glarry make some pretty quality knock off brand P basses if you're just wanting to mess around with one. I've never been Jazz bass fan as far as the sound goes. Don't skimp on amp brand quality imo.
