YALE, Okla. — The 17th Annual Payne County Winter Encampment, a two-day event that re-enacts the Civil War Battle of Round Mountain, is set this weekend in Yale.

The event will be sponsored by the Jim Thorpe Memorial Foundation.

Linda Frick, a representative of the Jim Thorpe Home, said the event’s first day — Saturday — will be a free day for children and teachers.

“(Children) will be able to go into the camps ... and they can talk to the soldiers and some of them will be cooking and they’ll invite them to taste what they’re making,” said Frick.

She said they expect a blacksmith to be present to demonstrate work, as well as a doctor with instruments laid out, explaining how he would have practiced medicine in that era.

“It will be an educational experience for them,” said Frick. “It’s kind of like walking through living history.”

While previous years’ events have been held at Jim Thorpe Park, this year the re-enactment will be held behind the Assembly of God in Yale.

The battle re-enactment will begin at 2 p.m. on both days.

“We’re going to have six cannons this year — three on each side,” said Frick. “And, of course, during the battle they will be firing the cannons.”

She said the cannons are loud enough to require earplugs for viewers.

Frick said she expects between 150 to 200 participants this year.

“We have them from as far away as Nebraska, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and probably even some further out,” said Frick.

“On Saturday, we will have a gigantic flag presentation,” said Frick.

A group from Oklahoma City will be on hand to showcase a big American flag prior to the start of the re-enactment.

Saturday night, a ball will be held in the gymnasium behind the high school from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A band will play music appropriate to the period and many will dress in appropriate period attire. Frick said there is plenty of seating for those who wish to come and watch.

“It’s something that everyone ought to see once so they know what our people went through to get to where we are today,” said Frick.

In addition to the Winter Encampment, the Jim Thorpe Memorial Foundation will also hold a month-long quilt show throughout February. Those who wish to participate may bring a quilt to the Jim Thorpe Home for display. The public will vote and prizes will be awarded in two categories — regular size and baby quilts.

For more information, call Frick at 918-387-2815 Wednesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I thought it sounded interesting, the "encampment" reminds me of taking my kids to the rendezvous at Woolaroc years ago. They got to see and touch things they'd only read about or seen on t.v., I believe it was truly a great learning experience for them.
