I plan on doing a "modern" AK build. I started a thread on arfcom and will be doing a thread here as well. Anyway, I tried to base the build around an I.O. and was not happy with the rifle. I ended up selling it an buying an SGL-21. Arsenal makes a quality rifle.

Yea, I am not happy with the quality of the "American" Made IO rifle, as long as it functions and doesnt fall apart I will keep it, if not I will get it working and dump it.

You cleaned the rust off an AK? Didn't you know the Kalashnikovs use rust as a lube?!.. Lol

But anyhow, those amd's are cool. A buddy of mine has an original Hungarian.

I was thinking of putting a houge grip on it, if it fits. Other than that I am just waiting on the Cheek Riser from AMD Tech, going to work on getting the UltimAK rail mounted this week, looks like it will take some modding and tinkering but shouldn't be too hard.

As far as the 74, that is the one thing I have heard is good about IO, their warranty is honored and rifles are replaced. Just wondering if they would have an issue with the fact that I stripped the carrier and bolt of the finish they put on it...

Why did you strip the carrier and bolt of the finish? Just for looks? because i honestly like the look of it stripped better.

One of the reasons was Neal suggested it, the other reason was the bolt and carrier on the 74 werent as smooth as they should have been in my opinion. After stripping what paint I could off of it I used 0000 steel wool and cleaned it up real well, and then I used never dull polish on all of the areas of contact and the receiver rails. Big difference in how the carrier pulls now, it slides back using just my pinkie finger and there are no hang ups.

And yes the stripped bolts look sweet.

At one time i was thinking of doing this to my WASR but kinda chickened out. I do think it looks sweet though! Maybe one day ill pull the trigger and strip it!

Yep rust don't hurt no AK! :D

The AMD that Travis has is a TGI build. They are practically an original Hungarian for all intents and purposes. And for $400-450 that you can pick one up at, they are an absolute steal! They are pretty much built entirely in Hungary at the FEG factory on the same assemble line that is producing the military versions. FEG receiver, original 12.5" chrome lined military barrel, chrome line gas block, sights, stock, etc....it's all Hungarian milspec. They are imported in to the US with single stack mag cuts and no trigger group. All TGI does to the rifles is opens up the mag well to accept standard high cap mags, welds on an extended muzzle brake to get to the legal length, and then puts in the excellent (IMO) G2 trigger group. And that's about it.

So in the end you get a very high quality AK where a majority of the rifle is assembled at a factory that produces real military weapons.
