I've done the home workout thing since retiring from the military. I've found out that I do better in a structured, mentored program...and it's something my wife and I can do together and get away from the house/kids.

I read all the criticisms of Crossfit before jumping in, and so far most of it appears to be written by folks who never tried it and/or a "my workout is cooler than your workout" attitude. I'm antisocial and highly critical by nature, yet the entire experience so far has been positive. That says something, at least to me.

As far as the expense..."expensive" is subjective and relative. Do what works for you. I'll see if this works for me.

Hiding from all you crazy people!!!
If your that good you should go to the Crossfit Games and smoke them all and win the big cash prize and sponsorships.

What makes you think I don't? With the exclusion of winning big money and sponsors, I do compete is some of the crossfit style competitions. I actually did one a couple weeks ago. I'm out of shape for me right now and it was still super easy.
Look at it this way. There are reasons why no professional baseball, basketball and only one football teams trainers allow thier guys to do crossfit. That one football team excludes all Olympic lifting from their crossfit work outs.
The best most knowledgable trainers in the country will not allow thier guys to do this stuff. I'll base what I do off what they know, not some weekend warrior "box coach" that got his 8 hr certificate to be a crossfit instructor.
As for only guys that don't do crossfit or have never done it are the ones that talk crap about it. That's actually backwards. Only the people that don't know anything about working out and choose to do crossfit are the ones that swear by it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for anything that gets your azz off the couch and in shape. But their are a lot better ways to do it. But If crossfit is what it takes for you to do that then have at it.

I'm the same way in terms of needing or liking the structure of classes. I was doing a ton of various types of classes early last year through last fall and I dipped my toe into crossfit relatively speaking. I really liked for sure and some instructors suck but that happens with ANY fitness regiment. Job got in the way and I've only recently went back as I miss it. For me, Yoga did wonders paired up with crossfit or some of the more intense classes. YMMV.

I agree GM...I think Yoga would help with flexibility. I'm almost 3 months into CF and I'm still diggin' it.

As with any other discipline, the responsibility for proper form rests with the individual first. I've focused less on speed and weight than I have proper form, and the trainers support that.

Good stuff!

I'm not a big CF fan although I've never done it. It obviously works for some people but I've always tried to maintain good/decent form with all movements and from what I've seen, from Youtube to National competitions on ESPN, CF doesn't look like it's built for the long haul, it's lift the damn thing anyway you can, worry about back issues later. Don't get me started on the chin-ups.

I walk out into my garage, have a good enough setup to do whatever I want to do along with a sledgehammer, atlas stone and tractor tire out back. Farmers DBs, dip stand, trap bar....
No, I'm not a big strong guy either. I prefer to lift alone, get in and get out, no conversation.
Do what you're comfortable with and what works for you, if it's CF and you can live with it, have at it.
