the driver pretty adamantly proclaims "I don't care"

That does change my perception - dang. But as for swerving to miss an animal, I'd guess most drivers would be focused on what's ahead of them, not what's coming up on the left, when swerving. It could be a total surprise for the driver in that type of situation, hence the need for the cyclist to exercise far more caution than what was exhibited in the video. As it is, purposeful swerving and saying one doesn't care are no bueno.

Looks like biker and car driver were a-holes. No excuse for what the driver did. Hope he gets locked up and the biker gets cited.

http://hcnews.com/pages/updates/driver-of-car-in-motorcycle-accident-claims-he-was-in-shock/

The driver of a car that struck a motorcycle Saturday afternoon on Tin Top Highway was heard on a video afterward saying “I don’t care.” When asked about the crash that injured two people, he told the Hood County News Monday morning that he “was in shock” when he said that, and that he swerved because he was bitten by a spider. William Crum, 68, said he was given a sobriety test at the scene, but was not arrested. DPS Senior Trooper Dub Gillum said Monday that the case “is now at the District Attorney’s Office.” The driver of the motorcycle, 37-year-old Eric Sanders of Granbury, was injured and treated at the scene. The passenger, 38-year-old Debra Simpson, is in the ICU at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. At the scene of the accident, Crum told a Hood County News reporter that he swerved because he had been stung by a bee. The motorcycle was trying to pass the car in a no-passing zone, according to DPS Senior Trooper Dub Gillum. The investigation is ongoing.

Two wrongs don't make anything right. The guy on the bike should not have been trying to pass in a reckless way, for that matter the guy with the camera is probably due a speeding ticket. The guy driving the car needs to pay some medical bills for the woman who is in the ICU (the guy who was controlling the bike can pay his own) and spend a year or two in jail for his actions though. On top of it all the driver is a pretty poor liar, he already can't keep the story straight...It was a spider, no wait a bee did it AND I was in shock.

Agreed. The driver is an obvious douche, but the rider is stupid for putting his g/f in danger.

Apparently he shouldn't have been riding at all: "Sanders was cited at the scene for passing in a no-pass zone and for driving with an invalid license."

Doesn't make the car driver right, but sure seems like there's plenty of asshattery to go around. Curious though - who has the right-of-way during a pass in Texas?

I'll agree the cyclist shouldn't have passed, even though none of the speeds involved looked excessive, it was a no passing zone.

What I find really interesting now is that I just saw a gofundme page for the cyclist, and his GF. Guess I am way old school, but I've never looked for other people to cover me financially. I guess it's nice that there are vehicles to promote help like that now, but I've always just done what needed to be done...
