I'm in the market for a new set of binoculars for the upcoming deer season. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I'm willing to pay for quality. I definately want something as small as possible for easy use in the field. Anyone have a suggestion?

I dont if its what you after, but last year I got a pair of Leupold Mojave 12x50. I love them! To me they were well worth the money and while they are not Swarovski's they were the best bang for my buck. Just my opinion though.

No matter which brand you go with, I would recommend not going with any higher power than an a 8x if you're just using them primarily in OK. Eye strain increases dramatically with the 10's and 12' and if they're not comfortable to look through, you won't use them. I have had a pair of 8x42 Pentax for almost 10 years, $279 and a friend has a pair of Nikons of the same power, price almost identical. We can glass all day long with them with no problem. I have two friends who liked mine, bought the same binocs but thought they would want the greater magnification so they got the 10's and ended up going back and buying the 8's. JMO

The monarch 8x42's are pretty decent. Depending on the type of hunting you are doing, I like the Steiner predator series. The 8x30's in particular with the permanent focus are really cool and fast. They don't have the low light capability of the Monarch's but they are fine. I think the best pair of bino's I have is my Vortex Viper 8.5x50's. In fact they were so good I bought 3 pair.

nikon 8x40 for a little over 200 dollars, would'nt recommend anything smaller or you wo'nt be able to see in low light and thats when you need them the most.Steiner,Zeiss or other high end binoculars are nice if your rich i guess but will not help you kill any more deer.as long as its leagal shooting light i can field judge a buck just fine and you do'nt shoot a deer with binoculars,so a scope i would spend what ever i could afford.

I bought some Belmont 7X35's at the PX in DaNang in the early 70's.
They still reside in the back seat of my pickup to this day. Amazing glass.
Okie4570, your welcome to look through them this winter.

I don't know the reason, but to this day, there has never been a cleaning cloth on the lens, and they are still sharp in the view.
