Aaand computer simulation games...then this is the game for you:
Silent Hunter 4...Wolves of the Pacific
It is a bit older (2007) so it will run on even weaker machines like my 4yr old laptop. Graphics and AI are still pretty good. And the interior is modeled very well. I've actually been inside a Gato class sub, and they modeled it very well.

Here are some screenshots from my most current mission:

Early morning off the western Australian coast:

Hitting some sampans off the Indonesian coast with the 20mm:

A convoy in the Philippines that has a date with destruction:
[Broken External Image]

About to fire after waiting 300' below the surface all quiet for the convoy to pass over. Then I rose to periscope depth and fired with ships behind and in front. That way there is no wake from the periscope and less chance of detection from the escorts when I'm not running the propeller.

Impact! on a tanker:

The damage on a ship that limped away while the escorts were attempting to depth charge me...

A friendly battleship back in Fremantle:

End of patrol, quite a nice tally:

This is an excellent game if you're into that stuff...please comment on the game OR on the real US submarine campaign in the Pacific!

EDIT: some the pics are kind of fuzzy because of the screen capture process.

I was playing with duds ON and I only had about 4 out of the 26 fish malfunction. Nothing like the endemic issues they had at that time (something like 90% failure rate).
But previous patrols I've had more issues. That's why I usually fire at least two at any ship.

I haven't played that particular sub sim as my interest has been mainly in the Atlantic Theater of Operations, so my experience is limited to the sub sims involving German U-Boats. It's been a LONG time since I played those, and I usually fast-forwarded through missions until the convoys were within torpedo range :wink2:

Silent Hunter 3 covered the U-Boats.
More convoy attacks, less use of guns in SH3. It just feels better shooting at virtual non-American ships.
And the Japanese escorts are far less sophisticated than the Allied escorts. But there so many carriers running around!

Sometimes they fired 15 at a ship, and it still didn't sink:

Dan Daspit (in Tinosa) carefully documented his efforts to sink 19,000-ton whale factory ship Tonan Maru III on 24 July 1943. He fired four torpedoes from 4,000 yd (3,700 m); two hit, stopping the target dead in the water. Daspit immediately fired another two; these hit as well. With no enemy anti-submarine combatants in sight, Daspit then took time to carefully maneuver into a textbook firing position, 875 yd (800 m) square off the target's beam, where he fired nine more Mark 14s and observed all with his periscope (despite the Japanese firing at it). All were duds.[29] Daspit, suspicious by now he was working with a faulty production run of Mark 14s, saved his last remaining torpedo to be analyzed by experts back at base. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.[22]

The Mark 14s are too reliable, but I'm sure there's a mod to fix that. However, the Mark 14 did also work sometimes, and when it did, it sunk ships.

I used to play a pacific naval game called Great Naval Battles, I also used to play a submarine game called Wolf Pack. It's been at least 15 years since I've played either.
