I'm no precision shooter, mainly buy cheaper .22lr to just plink around the 10-100 yard range. I would like to build a inventory of decent ammo that holds well under shelf life.

Academy - Federal Black box .22lr in 1100 round box's for $59.99 compared to $99.99. $49.99 w/ rebate if 2 or more box's are purchased.

Walmart - Winchester M22 in 1000 round for $67. Normal pricing I believe.

What is "normal/basic" .22lr ammo pricing?

My main question being, is all .22 ammo basically the same powder wise? Obviously there are different variations of the projectiles themselves but when looking at the aspect of stocking up should one look for a certain ammo containing a certain powder etc?

In your opinion, are these ammo worthy of purchase? Thank you OSA members for any knowledge or input! 🇺🇲

I have shot 3 boxes (yes, 3300rds) of that Federal Black over the last 3ish years. No issues out of multiple rifles.

My favorite performers for bulk ammo are CCI Blazer and Aguila Super Extra.

I avoid Remington Thunderbolts and Golden Bullets at all costs.
Oh, and the Federal Automatch has been unreliable for me. Multiple failures to fire from multiple boxes over the last few years.

I had multiple brands of 22 lr in storage in a non climate controlled garage for about 10 years when we lived in hot humid Houston TX. All were in metal USA made ammo boxes with good rubber seals. Many times there were several brands mixed in a single ammo box.

I have had a few failures on the Winchester X box, maybe 3-5 out of every 100. With The Remington, I experienced 10-15 failures out of every 100. Armscore brand and a few other discount brands were worse. The CCI has had zero failures. thankfully most of my inventory is CCI.

on the other side of this I have a brick of 500 rounds of federal “lightening” 22 lr that was gifted to me. Forgotten in the back of a closet in a climate controlled house for decades. Based on the box design and printing I think they were from the late 1970’s. The first 50 have fired flawlessly.
