I have been trying to lose weight for years. I eat right 95% of the time with an occasional cheat day to keep my soul happy. I walk when ever weather permits. Problem is some of my meds cause weight gain and the docs do not want me outdoors unless the temp is about 45 and below 85. That limits a lot of what I can do. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a new doc since my old one no longer takes my insurance. Hopefully he will get me off some of this crap.

I’m in a similar boat as you. I started a new med last fall and I’ve been gaining weight. I actually changed meds to one that doesn’t have as much weight gain potential. Now if I wasn’t frustrated that it’s not coming off faster than it went on, I’d be a little happier.

Food tracking is really helpful to get a baseline of food intake. You can eat healthfully and still consume excess calories. Which reminds me that I haven’t been tracking my intake for the last few months.

I would also suggest you get a referral for a obesity and weight management specialist or ask the new doctor, if he could prescribe meds that help with weight loss, as long as it’s safe for you to take them.

So fasting doesn’t have benefits but you recommend weight loss medication???

I’d recommend talking to a physician rather than taking my word for it.

But if it works for You, that’s great. Just don’t think it will benefit everyone the way it works for You. Some people can fast, eat one meal a day, or just eat one type of food (spoiler: you just get bored eating the same food repeatedly and eat less) and lose weight by restricting calorie intake; others can still manage to to consume a surplus of calories. At the end of the day you still have to be in a deficit, if you want to lose weight.

The foods you choose can impact satiety and make eating in a deficit easier.

It’s also not bad or wrong to take medications to help reduce weight. There’s strong evidence that part of what we are fighting is linked to parts of the brain, newer meds target those areas and assist with weight loss.

Remember fen-phen? The weight loss drug? Doctors were prescribing that and saying it was safe all the time back in the day.

Yes, Phentermine is still prescribed. Just because one combination of drugs cause an issue in a very small number of patients doesn’t mean that all anti-obesity meds are harmful.

I think weight loss drugs are way over-prescribed. If you are 500 lbs, sure, the risk from the drug is less than carrying that much weight. But otherwise, it's calories in vs calories out unless your on some other meds that have screwed your metabolism.

I really like the TV diet pills that say "take two magic vita weight loss pills, eat a sensible diet and exercise daily and you'll lose the weight". Well no s**t.

Yeah I’ll just lay off the cheeseburgers and skip the weight loss drugs.

Phentermine will work as long as you take it and adjust your eating habits. If you don't adjust your habits, you will gain what you lost and THEN some!
