A man whose $50,000 coin collection was first stolen, then hocked, cannot recover it from Las Vegas' famous "Pawn Stars" pawn shop. Reason: The hock shop claims it melted the coins down.

I feel bad for the guy.

OK, someone help me understand something here.

It was my understanding that it was illegal to melt US Coins for their precious metal content.

I know alot of places that "buy gold and silver coins", but I was unaware that these coins would then go to the melter.

Is it illegal to melt US coins?

Not sure, why melt it anyway? Maybe easier to get rid of the silver than the coins?

It is illegal to melt U.S. currency. the law was enacted in 2006 I believe.
