So Rick or the Old man bought some coins, didnt research the value and melted them down for silver content. Sounds fishy.

OK, someone help me understand something here.

It was my understanding that it was illegal to melt US Coins for their precious metal content.

I know alot of places that "buy gold and silver coins", but I was unaware that these coins would then go to the melter.

Is it illegal to melt US coins?

I think pennies and nickels are the only coins subject to the melt ban.
