Dino Cazares. Fear Factory and Asesino guitarist. Hes been a monster metal player since the mid 90s. Hes the main guy who got me into 7 strings. I caught 2 shows on their tour last year with Coal Chamber and they were awesome both times same as they were in 96'.

Best I've seen live is by far Derek Trucks. He is not my favorite though. Not by a longshot. Technical proficiency is not that interesting to me. At all. I like unique players.

My favorites I've seen live are:

Neil Young
Jason Isbell
James McMurtry
Josh Homme
Blake Mills
Matt Pike
Buddy Guy
Ted Nugent (Nuge would be boring if he didn't play hollow bodies. That's fun to watch live)

One's I haven't seen? Add Dean Wareham to the list for sure. And Carrie Brownstein.

You aren't missing anything having not seen Dean Wareham. Some Luna and Galaxie 500 is okay, but he's a VU hack and he knows it.

I think Junior Brown is underrated. Cheesy, but really proficient.

One of the first things I wanted to do when I knew I was moving to Tulsa area was see Junior Brown and his gitsteel.

I love Galaxie 500. I hear Dean is a prick, tho. Haven't read his book. Still like his stuff. Most good rock bands are Sabbath, Zepplin, or VU hacks, depending on style. Lawl.

You can see Junior Brown's house from my parent's front porch. Unless he's moved recently.

I like most all the pickers listed in this thread! One of the best concerts I've EVER seen was a Merle Haggard show at the old Ziegfeld's in Tulsa off 71st street back in the late 70's. That was when he had his large band and I got to see Eldon Shamblin up close playing that gold colored Strat that now hangs in the Cains. There may be better guitarists than Shamblin somewhere, but none more complete. That man knew his stuff!

We've probably never heard the best,,,
If there even is a best.

The more salient question might have been,,,
Who is the best of the famous band guitarists?

I say this because I know a lot of studio guitarists,,,
There is nothing that Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, Robin Trower, etc. ever played,,,
That most of these people can't recreate or play better without even breaking a mild sweat.

Hit Norman some day when Terry (Buffalo) Ware is gigging,,,
If he's in the mood you will hear guitar that will make you shed tears.

Same for a homely old bald dude named Gregg Standridge,,,
This man has had a guitar in his hands for over 45 years.
He's classically trained but has the Blues in his bones.

The only reason they aren't famous is because no one ever decided to market them,,,
The skill level and depth of emotion in their music is as good as anyone.

Aarond

P.S. The reason I can get away with calling Gregg bald and homely,,,
Is because he's my baby brother and I love him dearly.
